ART: The Forgotten Railway of Albania

Forgotten StationThe Albanian railway doesn’t really exist any more. A country-wide network has crumbled away. No longer connecting the Northern Mountains to the Southern Adriatic, no longer connecting Albania to it’s neighbours. No opportunity for people to travel from Tirana to the country.

In this wonderfully nostalgic exhibition Tirana Expres shows what we have lost.

The beautifully curated show invites into the story of each trip as passengers and conductors went on their way.

Train timetables – Ishmail Kadare:

I love those train timetables at little railway stations,
Standing on the wet platform and contemplating the infinity of the tracks.
The distant howl of a locomotive. What, what?
(No one understands the nebulous language of steam engines)

Passenger trains. Tank cars. Freight cars full of ore
Endlessly pass by.
Thus pass the days of your life through the station of your being,
Filled with voices, noise, signals
And the heavy ore of memory.
